Less is More (hopefully)

I've decided to bulk up this blog with the odd back-dated pieces of art I've attempted.  Here's the first one.

I lean towards an impressionist style, leaving detail out of the picture as much as possible.  I've found encouragement through artists such as Degas: his piece entitled 'Combing The Hair/La Coiffure' (c. 1896) really impressed me when I saw it for the first time in 2007 at the National Gallery's 'Fresh Look at Modern Masters' exhibition.

I also admire the constrained execution (no pun intended) of Gerhard Richter's Bader Meinhof paintings, such as this one from 1988 'Tote/Dead'.

I made a candid sketch of a young woman sleeping on the train back from London, in November last year.  I am pleased with the simplicity of it.

My fear, when painting or drawing, is overworking the piece and spoiling what I've achieved.  Perhaps a skill on a par with learning to draw is learning to stop!
